Nasser symbolized Arab unity after he nationalised the Suez Canal and was seen as having won a political victory in the Suez crisis. After Egypt’s defeat in the 1967 Six-Day War Nasser resigned, but returned to office by public acclamation. Nasser suffered a heart attack in 1970 and died. His funeral in Cairo drew five million mourners and grief across the Arab world.
